A specialist warns of the dangers of lack of sleep on eye health

An ophthalmologist has linked glaucoma (blue water), which increases vision problems, to a lack of sleep.

And the Russian specialist, Dr. Svetlana Mirgorodskaya, explained that there are medical consequences of lack of sleep on the eyes, including high pressure inside the eyes and then an increased risk of glaucoma, decreased visual acuity, central serous chorioretinopathy, and a decrease in the quality of the tear film with an exacerbation of dry eye syndrome.

She noted that the medical consequences of lack of sleep include a decrease in insulin sensitivity, the production of the hormone somatotropin and neurotransmitters, as well as a disturbance in the level of blood pressure, and the recurrence of infectious diseases such as conjunctivitis and iridocyclitis, in addition to an increase in the production of cerebrospinal fluid or a violation of its flow (swelling of the optic nerve).

She stressed that a person needs 7-9 hours of sleep per day in order for the nervous system to function normally, but lack of sleep leads to an increase in the stress hormone level.
