A fire broke out in the new Tesla car, the “S Blade 2021”, on Tuesday evening, in the US state of Pennsylvania, while the owner was behind the wheel, according to what the fire department in the town of “Lower Merion” announced, on Friday.
Tesla began delivering the “S Blade” model, a new high-performance version of the leading electric sedan, in June, although the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, had announced in previous statements that delivery would begin next February.
Musk said in April that the development presented “more challenges than expected,” adding that it “required a significant amount of development to ensure that the new Model S and X battery are safe.”
The car owner’s lawyers told CNBC that he noticed smoke coming from the back of his car, and tried to open the doors, but he had to get out of the car by force, as the locks appeared to be broken.
After he left the car, it started moving on its own and caught fire.
Merion County Fire Chief Charles McGarvey told CNBC that two crews of firefighters worked at the scene for more than 3 hours to deal with the emergency.
NBC recently reported that an electric car battery fire takes more than 25,000 gallons of water to fully extinguish, while a typical internal combustion engine car fire can be put out with about 300 gallons of water.
A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told CNBC that it is aware of the Tesla car fire in Pennsylvania and is in contact with the relevant agencies and the manufacturer to gather more information about the accident.
“If data or investigations show a defect or an inherent safety risk, management will take appropriate action to protect the public,” the spokesperson emphasized.
In the coming days, Tesla is expected to reveal the number of vehicles it produced and delivered during the last quarter.
