The death of a child and 8 critical cases due to a virus … and the “World Health Organization”: “unusual cases”

One of nine newborns in Wales and southwest England who developed acute myocarditis, caused by a viral enteric infection, has died.

And the health authorities stated that the other 8 children were admitted to intensive care rooms, placed on a ventilator, and received circulatory support, according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.

Health officials are investigating possible causes for this group of children, especially after an increase in the number of newborns with myocarditis, which peaked in Wales last November.

A consultant pediatrician in the United Kingdom, Dr. Shams Ladani, said that infection with enteroviruses is common in childhood, and in very rare cases enteroviruses can lead to serious complications.

The World Health Organization described this number of cases as “extraordinary” and recommended the closure of child care facilities and schools if cases increased.

Since last February, paramedics in South Wales have been required to search for cases and test for enteroviruses if infection is suspected.

Myocarditis usually occurs after a viral infection, as a result of the body’s immune system overreacting to fight the infection, causing myocarditis.
