Mexico: Banning concerts and songs glorifying drug dealers
The municipal authorities of Cancun, the tourist front of Mexico, announced the ban on holding concerts and songs that glorify drug dealers and promote violence called “narcocoridos”.
And the Mayor of Cancun, Ana Patricia Peralta, has expressed her total objection to this type of traditional Mexican music, which “in one way or another, promotes violence.”
For its part, Grupo Firme, one of the most popular groups in regional music (Rancheras, Nortinas), announced the cancellation of a concert scheduled for July 1, in light of the tightening of the municipality’s laws.
Traders and restaurant owners welcomed the decision on the grounds that this type of music attracts violent people who dedicate themselves to illegal activities.
Other Mexican cities have previously banned this type of traditional music, including Ciudad Juarez and Mexicali, which border the United States, as well as in the state of Sinaloa, the stronghold of drug dealer Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who is serving a life sentence in the United States.
