Scientists have begun to study the case of a 74-year-old Scottish woman, due to a genetic mutation that made her one of only two people in the world who can live without anxiety, fear or physical pain.
Scientists hope to study Cameron’s case to reveal the mechanisms of this rare mutation, and to enhance hope for the manufacture of improved painkillers.
Professor at the University of London Medical School, James Cox, explained that the discovery of the genetic root of Cameron’s unique pattern is a very exciting moment, noting that the current results will be a stepping stone towards further research.
And Cox added in a study whose results were published in the Medical Brain Journal that by accurately understanding what is happening at the molecular level, we can begin to understand the biology involved, and this opens up possibilities for discovering drugs that could one day have far-reaching positive effects for patients.
