A US company has devised a way to recycle the carbon dioxide that astronauts exhale during flight to make yeast-based nutrients into a protein drink intended to feed astronauts on long-duration missions into deep space.

Air Company co-founder and chief technology officer Stafford Sheehan said the innovative drink is more nutritious than Tang.

Sheehan, who holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Yale University, stated that he originally developed his carbon conversion technology as a way to produce perfumes, noting that the “Deep Space Food” challenge sponsored by “NASA” encouraged him to modify his invention to produce proteins, carbohydrates and edible fats. from the same system.

He explained that he also produced a single-celled protein drink from carbon dioxide, which has a mixture texture like milk and tastes like “seitan”, which is a food prepared from wheat gluten that originated in East Asia and is adopted by vegetarians as a vegetarian alternative to meat.

He added that apart from protein drinks, the same process can be used to produce other carbohydrate-filled alternatives to prepare bread, pasta and tortilla bread.
