Study: Eating dark chocolate enhances memory and fights dementia

A recent study revealed that eating chocolate helps enhance memory and fight dementia. For the presence of memory-stimulating substances in the dark types, including flavanols.

The researchers also found that consuming 500 milligrams of flavanols, which are found in apples, berries and green tea, enhances memory power, which, according to the researchers, can be easily achieved through a healthy diet.

One of the participants in the study, Professor Aidan Cassidy, Queen’s University Belfast, indicated that one cup of green tea, 6 squares of dark chocolate, and two servings of berries and an apple would provide the required 500 mg.

The research, published in the journal The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was conducted on more than 3,500 adults, who were in their 70s, on average, and most of whom already ate a healthy diet full of flavanols.

The researchers stressed that the results were better in the case of people who were already suffering from flavanol deficiency, while this dose (500 mg) had no effect on people who did not suffer from a deficiency.
