Yesterday (Friday), the Asir region witnessed the launch of the Qimam International Festival for Mountain Performing Arts, in its second edition, which is organized by the Theater and Performing Arts Authority, and will last for a week in seven locations in the region.
The festival’s activities kicked off with a grand carnival parade yesterday evening on Art Street in Abha, with the participation of popular bands from the participating countries, as well as vehicles designed to mimic the cultural and folkloric aspect of those countries.
The march showed the diversity of the traditional and popular costumes that characterize the countries participating in the festival, as 16 Saudi bands and 14 international bands presented about 32 mountain performance colors from all over the world.
Sultan Al-Bazai, CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Authority, said: “Qimam” is the first international festival specialized in mountain performing arts, which would contribute to introducing the archaeological heritage sites in the Asir region.
And he stated that this version of the festival will be known as: “Basta Al-Qabil”, “Abu Shahra Palace in Al-Maqi”, “Shamsan Castle”, “Historic Bin Adhwan Village”, “Malik’s Historical Palace”, “Al-Mushait Palaces” and castles. “Abu Point of Protection”.
He explained that the festival will witness the holding of a number of concerts and cultural activities that may not be available in modern cities, such as: the storyteller, weddings and rituals of the village, unique foods and activities, and it also seeks to highlight the folklore of the Kingdom.
He added that the festival aims to raise awareness of the arts and the ancient heritage in the Kingdom and the world, and introduces visitors to its history, arts, methods, and how to perform it. Pointing out that heritage has a role in bringing people together, which is the main message that the festival focuses on.
