The Women’s Communication Group calls on G20 leaders to take immediate action to close the gender gap
Yesterday (Wednesday), the Women’s Communication Group of the Group of Twenty challenged the leaders of the group’s countries to fulfill their previous promises and make women’s economic equality a reality.
The Women’s Communication Group delivered its closing statement to the representative of the G20 Presidency, Minister of Commerce and Chairman of the G20 Trade and Investment Working Group, Dr. Majid Al-Qasabi, explaining several key measures required to accelerate economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The head of the Women’s Communication Group, Dr. Thoraya Obaid, stressed that if urgent measures are not taken, the pandemic will continue to exacerbate gender inequality, expose deep-rooted weaknesses, and undermine any gains previously made in the field of equality. Women will also be negatively and disproportionately affected, once again. And they will bear the brunt of a multidimensional crisis, calling on the leaders of the G20 countries to act immediately to achieve gender equality.
Obaid proposed several measures to the leaders of the G20 to achieve this goal, including ensuring equal representation of women at all levels of decision-making, adopting gender-sensitive financial plans, increasing investment in the areas of child care, therapists, health care, education and training, and stimulating women’s participation in the entrepreneurship sector. and increasing women’s and girls’ access to digital technology.
The Women’s Communication Group is concerned about the lack of direct recognition so far by the leaders of the G20 countries of the impact of the pandemic and national responses to it on women. To date, relief packages adopted by governments globally have failed to take into account the specific financial and institutional needs of women. The presented final statement aims to address these shortcomings and achieve sustainable and lasting change for women globally.
