Study: Artificial intelligence errors threaten the health of millions

A study prepared by experts and doctors in the field of public health warned of the danger of artificial intelligence technology to millions of people, whether directly by causing some medical errors, or indirectly through the negative psychological and social effects left by this technology.

The study, prepared by experts from the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Costa Rica and Malaysia, said that artificial intelligence technologies could pose an “existential” threat to humanity if it is not regulated, despite its ability to revolutionize health care.

The study showed that artificial intelligence errors in harming patients, and issues related to data privacy and security, and one example of this is the use of an artificial intelligence-driven pulse oximeter that in experiments overestimated blood oxygen levels in dark-skinned patients, which led to mishandling their hypoxia.

She indicated that artificial intelligence could harm the health of millions through the mental health effects of mass unemployment in the event that systems based on artificial intelligence lay off large numbers of workers, and the job losses that will accompany the widespread spread of artificial intelligence technology, with estimates ranging from tens to hundreds of millions within next decade.

In the study, experts stressed that effective regulation of the development and use of artificial intelligence is necessary to avoid harms, and until such regulation is implemented, the development of self-improving artificial general intelligence should be banned.
