The populist Italian government is seeking to encourage couples to have children by offering families with a third child a plot of agricultural land, according to what Italian media revealed on Wednesday.

This measure, put forward by the far-right party “Northern League” and included in the draft budget for 2019, provides for the assignment of a piece of land from the public domain for a period of twenty years in favor of families expanding between 2019 and 2021.

“It is said that Italians do not have many children and the equation must be reversed,” said Agriculture Minister Jean-Marco Centinaio, who belongs to the Northern League, noting that the ministry wants to contribute to this effort.

The birth rate in Italy is among the lowest in Europe. The Northern League has put this issue at the heart of its priorities, vowing to revitalize the economy to restore the desire to have children to Italians.

The Minister of Family Affairs, who also belongs to this party, has supported the measure, noting that it will only affect married partners who have resided in Italy for more than ten years.

According to the “Coldiretti” union, which is the largest agricultural union in the country, the state still owns half a million hectares of agricultural land, with a total value estimated at about 10 billion euros. However, the newspaper “Corriere della Sera” reported that the state had sold its best lands, leaving “only waste.” .
