A recent medical study determined the length of time for mothers wishing to have children again by the need to wait for at least a year, after the birth of the last child, to reduce health risks to the mother and fetus, but the World Health Organization recognized that the ideal time period is two years, and it should not be less for 18 months.
According to the study, the short period between one pregnancy and another leads to many health risks, including the possibility of premature birth or the birth of babies with a lower weight, and the risks may reach the death of the infant or the mother.
Dr. Wendy Norman, co-author of the study, said, “At the very least, the birth interval of one year should be achieved to reduce complications.”
The study included nearly 150,000 births in Canada, supervised by the University of British Columbia and the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
The study concluded that a period of 12 to 18 months is the ideal period between two births.
According to current WHO guidelines, the ideal interval between two births is 24 months and no less than 18 months.
Short term risk
Pregnancy less than 12 months postpartum was associated with health risks for women of all ages during new pregnancies.
The risk of death or disease increases by 1.2% for women over the age of 35 who decide to become pregnant after only six months of giving birth.
Waiting 18 months between conception and embarking on a new pregnancy reduced the risk to 0.5%.
The preterm birth rate is 8.5% for younger women who decide to become pregnant six months after giving birth.
The risk of premature birth drops to 3.7% if younger mothers wait 18 months between pregnancies.
