Hyundai took some time to catch up to the burgeoning SUV segment, but now it’s shining and may be setting its sights on the lead.
The “Auto Blog” website said that the South Korean company will launch a crossover car at the New York exhibition scheduled for next April, which will be smaller and cheaper than the Hyundai Kona, noting that the expected model is being prepared abroad, especially in India, for at least three years.
Hyundai showed an initial version of the car under the name “Carlino” at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2017, and it is expected that it will carry the name Styx in global markets.
The site indicated that the new car will be based on the same platform (chassis) as the Hyundai Grand i10, and its length will be less than 157.4 inches, while its sister Kona will be 161.3 inches long.
“We want the ambitious crossover market and competition in it could open up a niche market for the company,” Sangyup Lee, who is in charge of Hyundai’s Global Design Center in South Korea, told Motor Trend.
As part of the company’s endeavor to achieve the greatest benefit “within a small space,” the company official said that the public is expected to see a distinctive shape and explained that, unlike the Hyundai Kona, the new car will be “largely box-shaped and with a bold feature.”
The site stated that the Styx will most likely be equipped with a 1.2-liter (gasoline) and 1.5-liter (diesel) engine with automatic transmission, adding that an electric version and a parallel model from “Kia” on the same chassis may appear later.
