Sweden becomes the first country in Europe to introduce self-driving public transport buses in 2020

Two self-driving buses are set to start rolling on the streets of Stockholm next year, making Sweden the first country in Europe to start deploying driverless buses on public roads, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported.

The electric-powered buses, developed by Scania Railways and Nubina Railways, will run on the Barkarbystadad-Akalla public route north of Stockholm during 2020.

The self-driving buses – which will set off on a private bus lane and monitored by a security driver – will start traveling without passengers for a kilometer of road, but will eventually cover a five-kilometer stretch, transporting up to 300 passengers per day.

Christopher Tamson, President of Stockholm Public Transport, said: “With this unique agreement, the company will write the history of European public transport.
