A suspected car thief managed to steal a Tesla Model 3 with a simple technical trick from a shopping center in the United States, and drove it away without the need for a key.
The (MSN) website said that the crime was carried out with a smartphone, and quoted a computer expert as saying that the suspect entered Tesla customer service to add the car to his account on the company’s website using the vehicle identification number.
And after he succeeded in entering the car from his phone registered to his Tesla account, the man was able to unlock the vehicle and drive it without the need for a key.
However, after a few days, the authorities were able to track down the thief and seize the car in Texas, more than 1,600 kilometers from the place of the theft in Minnesota.
Although the thief disabled the GPS device in the car, the company that owns it, a car rental company, resorted to another method, which is tracking the freight unit.
The website said the 21-year-old thief had previously rented a number of Tesla cars from the same rental company.
Tesla said the alleged thief had likely rented the same car before, and that it had previously been recorded on his phone.
